NPQ applications are now open for 2026-2027!

Please be aware that there will only be one NPQ cohort in 2026-2027, starting in November 2026.

Full scholarship funding is available for all state funded schools for the NPQ in Headship (NPQH), NPQ in Senior Leadership (NPQSL), NPQ in Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) and NPQSENCO for 2026-2027. For all other NPQs, the DfE will offer scholarship funding to the top 50% of schools in England with the highest proportion of Pupil Premium funding.

Funded places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come basis, we therefore encourage colleagues that are interested to submit an early application to secure your place on your selected NPQ.

We anticipate that the DfE have provided enough scholarship places to meet national demand, however, if it is the case that the full allocation of scholarship funded places has been taken the order in which the applications are received will be considered. Therefore, we recommend that colleagues apply as early as possible.

If there are several applications from one school, it may the case that the Headteacher/Principal needs to allocate the NPQ places accordingly that come with scholarship funding attached.

Should the scholarship-funded places become over-subscribed, schools can self-fund the NPQ.

The DfE announced the funding process for the 2026-2027 cohort only at this stage. We expect further announcements on the scholarship funding for the 2027-2028 cohort towards the end of the next academic year.

As this is a scholarship funded NPQ and a requirement for colleagues in SENCO positions, the number of colleagues each school or setting can take may be capped. Applicants that require this qualification for their role will be prioritised.

Applications are welcomed from any colleagues interested in completing the NPQ SENCO. However, colleagues that require the qualification for their current roles will be prioritised.

The DfE announced that limited places will be available for scholarship funding for the 2026-2027 intake. This means we may need to speak to headteachers if we receive more applications than there are available places. In this scenario, Leeds Teaching School Hub will liaise with school leaders to ensure a fair distribution of scholarship funded places is allocated to each setting. Schools can then choose to self-fund any additional places.

Yes. If your school is not on the DfE list of schools eligible for scholarship funding, you can still have a school-funded place.
