The Practical Strategies to Support Pupils who are New to English CPD programme aims to ensure that teachers, and leaders of teaching, have an awareness of the higher extraneous cognitive load carried by students who are new to the English language and acquire strategies that will help students overcome these barriers.

  • Assessment of pupils who are new to English
  • How to identify individual levels of need
  • How to put bespoke levels of support in place
  • Language development
  • How to manage the cognitive load of students that are new to the English language
  • Sharing of practical strategies to support pupils that are new to English
  • Signposting to resources that are available
  • Academic theory and strategies to meet the needs of EAL pupils, particularly those who are new to English
  • How to identify and assess EAL students
  • Practical approaches for the mainstream classroom to support EAL pupils, with a focus on those who are new to English

Each school in Leeds is eligible for one free place on this CPD Programme, additional places will be charged at £50 per colleague

Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis however, as we expect the demand to be high we will endeavour to run further cohorts where possible
